Hello.

I just downloaded the player and the free initial file (Nirvana - Teen Spirit).

When I try to play the file, I get a "invalid mulitplayer smhtp file. please download again" message.

I've already taken these steps to try and get it to work:

* reinstalled the player
* downloaded the song again - twice
* uninstalled QuickTime and installed the version noted on the download page.

I would really love to get started, but I can't see spending any money buying songs until I get the free file to work so I can play around!

Thanks.

Dear All:

We are currently seeing a small but very significent number of users finding that when the MultiPlayer track is downloaded and played, the error "invalid mulitplayer smhtp file please download again" message appears.

Please make sure that you have a reliable internet connection when you first install a MultiPlayer track that you have downloaded, as any error in this install process will affect playback of the video.

To re-install, please locate the original .smhtp file and re-install this into your MultiPlayer Video Folder by selecting to play it.

Our apologies for difficulties that you are experiencing; we are trying to deal with this as soon as possible.

Many thanks

Michael

Occasionally the MultiPlayer Video folder is not created, sometimes if the MP is re-installed or may be moved to a new location etc. Please be aware that without this folder in this location, MultiPlayer tracks can not be installed and played; users will see error "invalid mulitplayer smhtp file please download again" message appears.
Please create 'MultiPlayer Video' folder in correct location:

PC XP: My Documents/My Music
Mac OS X: Users/Music

Please then locate original downloaded .smhtp file and re-install into your MultiPlayer Video Folder by double-clicking on it to play.

Also, please make sure that you have a reliable internet connection when you first install a MultiPlayer track that you have downloaded, as any error in this install process will affect playback of the video.

I'm having the same problem as the original poster. I'm running Windows Vista. I installed the newest Multiplayer and the recommended version of Quicktime. I created the 'MultiPlayer Video' folder in the 'My Music' folder and put the .smhtp files in there. The player loaded but then gave the error message "invalid multiplayer smhtp file. please download again" message. I tried 2 different files (the free nirvana one and the Fightstar one which I purchased) and neither of them work. I get the same message for both. I uninstalled the Multiplayer and Quicktime and installed the other version which I heard works (4.7.1) and re-installed the Multiplayer but I still get the same error message. I even tried rebooting and re-downloading both of the songs. Have I created the MultiPlayer Video folder in the wrong place? I just don't get what's wrong and why it won't work.I feel like I've wasted my money on the Fightstar track because I've tried everything I've read on here and I've also wasted about 5 hours all together trying to get this thing to work and still nothing. It kinda sucks. Any help?

Hi Chris,

I am very sorry to read about your problems getting started, it's obviously being incredibly frustrating for you.

In our help section there is a piece on Vista compatability problems that hopefully will sort this out for you. The issue is to do with Vista and Quicktime.

http://www.showmehowtoplay.com/help/multiplayer/installing_the_multiplayer_vista/

I hope that resolves the problem for you, however I will let the tech guys know and get back to you a.s.a.p.

Thanks again for your patience,

Regards,

Mark

Thanks Mark but I already read that page also. I'm already the admin on this computer so it's set to run the program properly. I don't think it's the program not working so much but the files themselves. It keeps giving me the invalid file, re-download again message. I opened the program on it's own and clicked 'File' and browsed for the .smhtp files and whichever one I click gives me that message. I just dpn't know what to do. I'll wait to see if the Tech can help me.
Thanks for the info though :D

Hi Chris,

Peter (from the showme tech team) here.
Sorry that you're having a problem.

It could be the files but we are aware that the current version of the MultiPlayer can have problems with Vista and may (incorrectly) report that files are invalid.

Could you please follow these instructions very carefully and let us know what happens ? To help, it's very important that you give us feedback on each point in turn, otherwise we may not be able to determine what's happening.

1. First, if you haven't done so already, please download the free track "multiplay_nirvana_smellsliketeenspirit_e1".
Then, right-click on the file and select the "Properties" option.

Please check that this shows the following (among other info):

Type of file: MultiPlayer Download (.smhtp)
Opens with: MultiPlayer 12-8

Size: 101 MB (106,317,192 bytes)
Size on disk: 101 MB (106,319,872 bytes)

If the file sizes aren't the same as these, that would indicate that the download failed for some reason
and the MultiPlayer will fail to import it.

If the sizes are ok, please continue with the following.

2 Click on the Windows "Start" icon (orb) and type "cmd" (without
the quotes) in the search box

3 This should show "cmd.exe" under "Programs". Right-click on
"cmd.exe" and choose "Run as Administrator". This should open a command window with a prompt of "C:\Windows>" or "C:\Windows\system32>".

4 Copy the following lines and paste them into the command window:

cd "%USERPROFILE%"\Music
mkdir "MultiPlayer Video"

cd "%USERPROFILE%\Music\MultiPlayer Video"
dir > "%USERPROFILE%\Music\MultiPlayer Video\temp.txt"
cd "%USERPROFILE%\Music\MultiPlayer Video"
dir

5. If that has worked, it should not have produced any error messages and it should have created the directory which the MultiPlayer needs when importing downloaded files.

6. Finally, right-click on the MultiPlayer icon on the desktop and choose "Run as Administrator". (I know that you're already an administrator but this is important, to ensure that the MultiPlayer runs with sufficient privileges)

7. When the MultiPlayer starts, choose "File / Play MultiPlay Video", change the "Files of Type" option to "MultiPlayer Downloaded Files (.smhtp)", navigate to where the free track has been downloaded and open the file (multiplay_nirvana_smellsliketeenspirit_e1.smhtp).

8. Watch the progress bar very carefully.
Hopefully, it will move to the end and the file will be imported correctly. If it gives the "invalid file" error, please let us know how far the progress bar reached. If it hadn't moved at all, that indicates that the MultiPlayer couldn't find / create / write to the destination directory; if it moved across for some time but didn't reach the end, that would suggest that the file is indeed corrupted somehow.

Sorry this is all rather convoluted but we'd really like to find out what's going on, so we can fix it in a future release.

Cheers,
Peter

Hi,

I'm having an "invalid file" error loading the track Oh When the Saints. I have tried several times with different browsers and even once with a download manager program.

I have loaded the Nirvana free file and it loads ok.

In the meantime please could you try downloading the free track 'amazing grace' and see if you have the same problem?

Hi Alejandro,

We are hoping that this is fixed now. Please could you download the file again and delete the previous one?

It seems there was a problem with the database.

Sincere apologies again.

Best wishes,

Mark

Thank you, Mark, for the quick answer.
Unfortunately, I have the same problem downloading the file today.
The Amazing Grace track also gives the "invalid file" message.
The Nirvana free track loads and plays ok.
I repeated all the process in a second machine with XP (my pc runs Vista), installing the software and the files from scratch, and I get exactly the same problems.

All the files seems to download ok by different methods. The "When the Saint" file size is always 41,829,632 according the dir command in a cmd window.
