This is the Aretha Franklin version of the song. Otis Redding originally wrote and recorded the song so the lyrics were reversed when recording the Aretha Franklin version. “Respect” is number 5 on Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest songs of all time.
The rhythm section on “Respect” was the legendary Muscle Shoals band. Tommy Cogbill played bass, and would have used a Fender Precision. Tommy also used to dip his right hand into a jar of Vaseline to help his technique! Tommy often recorded with a Fender Twin Reverb amp which had one speaker broken and disconnected. It was usually mic’ed off-axis using a Shure SM57.
